Offshore:
Getting' better every day! Good catches of gaffer Dolphin were had by several Charter boats this week. Capt. Jeff Fraser on the" Genesis" out of Holiday Isle marina racked several Dolphin in the teens along with a bunch of school fish. Capt. Paul Johnson running the Reef Runner from Whale Harbor Marina had a great catch of Dolphin and Black Fin Tuna on Wednesday. Reefs: Yellowtail Snapper catches have been good one day and off the next. That is due to the unsettled weather and more importantly the current on the edge of the reef. The Yellowtail should start up real good. SOON. The Partyboat Miss Tradewinds from Whale Harbor has been getting out to the reef and catching good on the Red Grouper and Mangrove Snapper. The night bite on the Mangroves will start SOON also. The shallow patch reefs will be red hot on moonless nights for the Mangrove Snapper as well as Grouper and Yellowtail.
Gulf and Bay:
Alright, the wind has still been the inhibiting factor for Gulf fishing. Capt. Lou Brubaker was out in the Gulf recently and said the water was still off color due to the wind, and to make matters more difficult the grass was thick too. Lou reported catching one large Spanish Mackerel (5lb.) and some Jacks. Moving back into the Bay, the Trout are still going good. With the warming water temps, look for the Mangrove Snapper bite to turn on real good. Fish the potholes in 5 to 8 feet of water. Drop in a chum bag and fish Shrimp and Pinfish. Along with the Snapper, look for Trout, jacks, Grouper and Ladyfish to round out the catch.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
Again this week, good Snook catches in the Flamingo area. Lots of Sharks in the channels and Tarpon will cooperate when the wind lays. With the high tide, it will be worthwhile to look for Redfish up in Snake Bight. The Bonefish have yet to crank up real good. The water temperatures are in the upper seventies, and just right for the Tarpon and Bones. Any lack of action from those species is certainly due to the unruly winds.
